Inspiration or Procrastination? Fine line. Big difference.

The difference between procrastination and inspiration

A lil’ while ago, I joined… Instagram.

And oh, I had BIG plans.

“I’m going to be like all my favorite celebs —Beyonce! Selena! Lauren! — and start sharing gorgeous, intimate, curated snapshots from my day! My dog, my workspace, my workouts…it’s going to be super fun and super inspiring for people! Wheeeee!”

I said to no one in particular.

Did I do any of that? Nope.

I completely forgot about my big plans to become the Internet’s next photographista, and instead… got completely sucked into other people’s Instagram accounts.

Ooh, what is my favorite blogger snapping photos of, today?

Unnngh, her outfit is sooo cute! Her office is adorbs, too.

WTF! Pie-scented candles & gold spray-painted pumpkins?? STOP it.

Many days passed.

My index finger practically became bruised from endless clicking and refreshing.

And one chilly night, my husband snuggled into bed, hoping for kisses and cuddles… but I barely registered his presence. Obviously, I was far too busy for that! I was frantically trying to find the super-cute polka dot pen I just saw on the Kate Spade Instagram. And stuff.

My ever-patient husband peered at my Instagram app with a mystified expression.

“What are you doing?” he asked. (Subtext: “Why aren’t you paying attention to me?”)

“I’m getting INSPIRATION,” I huffed. And promptly went back to salivating over a photo of a pumpkin muffin while delighting in my new pen purchase.

“Inspiration” is what I told myself, defensively.

“I’m a creative business owner. I need to get inspired!”

While that is completely true, the truth is… I wasn’t really getting “inspired.”

I was just procrastinating.

Procrastinating, instead of giving my hubby some love n’ attention.

Procrastinating, instead of writing new blog posts or content for my new program.

Procrastinating, instead of doing the stretches that I promised my trainer I’d do.

Procrastinating, instead of serving, creating or contributing.

In any way.

To anyone.

I know I’m not alone, here. I hear so many people saying things like, “I love reading blogs because I get so inspired!” or “Instagram is my crack because it’s soooo inspiring” but then… “Oops! I wasted the entire day getting ‘inspired’. Again.”

The definition of the word “Inspiration”is: “a person, place or experience that makes someone want to do or create something.”

Key words, here: do and create.

If you claim to be “super inspired, ”but you’re not actually doing or creating anything, then… news flash. That’s not true inspiration. That’s just procrastination.

The next time you swear that reading just one more blog post, or stalking one more pretty photo, or scrolling your Facebook feed one more time will give you “a burst of inspiration,” pause, and be honest:

Is it inspiration? Or just procrastination?

Fine line. Big difference.
